Seer of Sevenwaters (or how a strong, interesting character was compromised) [Jan. 26th, 2011|03:24 am]

Let me begin my brief, subjective review of Seer of Sevenwaters with this: I love Juliet Marillier. She is, hands down, my favourite fantasy author. Despite my criticism of any of the Sevenwaters books, I have always found the female characters to be strong, independent and interesting. I believe the previous books in the series to be well written, wonderful, touching books.

Seer of Sevenwaters was not. In fact, it was melodramatic, "stand by your man", sexist crap that I was hoping to avoid with this addition to the Sevenwaters series.

Felix is the worst character of all time... also, spoilers behind the cutCollapse )

Haha, alright, I got that out of my system. I just finished reading the book not even twenty minutes ago. I apologize if there are any glaring grammatical errors present in my review.

Just a reminder that Juilet's new book Seer of Sevenwaters is out today (in Australia at least, UK/US release date seems to be 7th of December)! It's retailing for about $36 at bookshops here, but can be ordered from the bookdepository.co.uk for about $20 (this is the Roc hardback US version).

Was anyone lucky enough to be in Perth last week and picked up a signed copy at Juilet's signing?

Arthurian story by Juliet Marillier? [Oct. 4th, 2010|06:59 pm]

I was surfing through goodreads last night, and came across Road to Camelot. The one reviewer said that it includes a short story by Juliet Marillier. And being a fan of both Marillier's books and Arthurian legend, that got my attention.

Has anyone here read this? Is it good?

I know I've been a total trash mod, but luckily you folks are blessedly low on the wank, so that's been fantastic.

Anyway, I've been out of the JM loop for awhile (jeesh, I remember when I was happy this comm had six members, then again, I also remember the long-ago days when I opened the first Gerard Butler community and it had 3 members besides me for, like, YEARS. Oh the nostalgia. BUT ANYWHO.), and just a couple of days ago I picked up "The Dark Mirror", the first of the Bridei Chronicles.

And I inhaled it. Read most of it this afternoon, in fact.

Seeings as I'm not going to get a chance to pick up the others til next weekend, what did folks think of it? I, for one, loved it. I adored the subtler character development of Bridei and I loved that Ferada surprised me. Plus I'm a geek for "Welsh" history, so huzzah for Mariller not calling it Wales but referring to the two kingdoms of the north (Gwenydd) and the south (Powys).

It's about time I reread the Sevenwaters trilogy so I could check out what came after the trilogy as well...

Is Heart's Blood worth the purchase? I passed it over on my last visit, but I need something of hers to tide me over until the next installment of Sevenwaters, lol.

Sevenwaters: The Same Only Different! [Dec. 12th, 2009|12:45 am]

Juliet's thoughts on writing the new Sevenwaters book

In this post dated June 2009, Marillier discusses her intentions for writing another book and the stylistic decisions she is making for the next novel, "Seer of Sevenwaters".

The article in its entirety has been placed under the following cut for those who cbb to click :p
The comments contain more discussion but I left them out:

The same only differentCollapse )

The comments also mention a Sevenwaters novella to be published in 2010:

"I had not thought I would ever use present tense, but earlier this year I wrote a Sevenwaters novella for an anthology (to be published in 2010) and in that I used a combination of past and present tense sections in an attempt to help the reader deal with a very big time frame for the story."
